On this tour you will be visiting and exploring the sister island of Gozo.
GOZO, or GHAWDEX as it is locally known measures about one third the size of Malta and although near it is quite distinct from Malta. Life in Gozo flows at a much slower pace than in Malta. Gozo is more a fishing and farming community, with spectacular greener countryside since tighter controls on development has left this island intact. The terrain in Gozo is made up of numerous hills and intensely cultivated fields, whilst the coast is made up of rugged cliffs, steep valleys and beautiful inlets. Gozo has also to offer historical sites, forts and amazing panoramas as well as one of the Maltese archipelago’s best preserved prehistoric temples, Ggantija.
First you will start by boarding the ferry to cross to Gozo, during the 20 min trip you can enjoy the sights of Comino island and the blue seas from the deck of the ferry. Once one land you will be taken to Dwejra to see the Azur Window and the inland sea. The Azur Window is one of the most photographed site on the island. This natural window cut into the rock is very imposing and the blue expanse beyond the window is impressive. In front of the Azure Window is the Blue Hole, and The Chimney, two of the most popular dive sites in Gozo. The Inland Sea is an inland lagoon in Dwejra. The Inland Sea is linked to the sea via a 100 meter cave in the cliff.
You will then head to Victoria, the capital city of Gozo, to visit the Cittadella. The Cittadella, high on the hill of the capital Victoria, is a fortified city built by the Knights of St John between 1599 and 1603. From here you will see breathtaking views of all the Island, in clear days you can even see Malta. Inside the Cittadella there are various sites of interest, the most impressive of all is the Cathedral, dedicated to Santa Maria.
You will next visit Xlendi Bay a delightful inlet which lies at the end of a deep, lush valley. Here you can enjoy the views whilst walking around the footpaths.
Before heading back to Malta you will visit the Ggantija Temple, one of the most important archaeological sites in the world and date from around 3600 to 3200 BC. The Ggantija Temple was built using gigantic megaliths which are so big that in the past locals believed that the temples were built by giants and hence the name Ggantija. The Ggantija megalithic complex consists of two temples surrounded by a massive boundary wall.
Along this tour you will also have free time for shopping in Gozo’s renowned shops of woolen goods and handmade lace.
